The Greatest Showman opened December 20th starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya, and Michelle Williams. This movie was amazing! It is a musical about P.T. Barnum’s life focusing on his starting what would become the circus. I know some have issues with the circus or different aspects, but this was a fictionalized movie version of Barnum.
I am biased in the fact that I adore musicals. I have seen many, disliked few. Normally, I like most of the songs on the soundtrack with an exception of one or two duds. There are no duds with these songs. Hugh Jackman was the perfect choice for the charismatic ringleader. Zac Efron has a wonderful chemistry with Jackman which shows in their number, “The Other Side”. Michelle Williams and Zendaya were complimentary in their supporting roles.
The real stand out for me though was Keala Settle as Lettie Lutz, the bearded lady. Her powerhouse voice blew me away. I love that though her voice is strong, she gave such a vulnerability to the part. I watched the videos of them workshopping the show, and they captured the first time Keala performed her big number, “This is Me”, for the cast. It is a song for all of us underdogs that brought me to tears. Watch it here. This is Me
